  1. 1924- . Japanese right-wing politician.
  2. Elected to parliament as a Liberal Democratic
  3. Party (LDP) deputy 1958, he became president
  4. of the LDP and prime minister Oct 1987. He
  5. and members of his administration were shown
  6. in the Recruit scandal to have been involved
  7. in insider-trading and in Apr 1989 he
  8. resigned. Takeshita, the son of a sake
  9. brewer, trained as a kamikaze pilot during
  10. World War II. He was a schoolteacher before
  11. beginning his political career in the House
  12. of Representatives, rising to chief cabinet
  13. secretary to Prime Minister Sato 1971-72 and
  14. finance minister under Nakasone. As prime
  15. minister he introduced a furusato (home-town)
  16. project giving 3,200 towns and villages a
  17. grant of 100 million yen ( 500,000) each.
  18. This benefited construction companies, who
  19. are among the main backers of Takeshita's LDP
  20. faction. The Recruit scandal and the
  21. introduction of a tax-reform bill including a
  22. consumption tax 1988 caused popular approval
  23. of Takeshita's government to drop
  24. dramatically. His profits from Recruit shares
  25. were revealed to be almost 900,000, and in
  26. atonement his closest aide committed suicide.
